Born in Salzburg, Karl Alfred Schreiner received his education at the Ballet School of Vienna Staatsoper. His first engagement took him to Graz where he could be seen, among others, in »Romeo and Juliet« in the choreography of Heinz Spoerli and in »Nutcracker Suite« in the choreography of Peter Schaufuss. From 1995 to 2000 he worked at the Vienna Staatsoper where he was appointed semi-soloist in 1999.

Schreiner has worked as a choreographer since 1999. Among his works are »Blame it on Gavrilo« (new production for the »Austrian Dance Days« and »Dance Europe«, Tel Aviv Opera House), »One Out of Ten« and »Déjà Waltz« (Abcdancecompany, Festival House, St Pölten), »Mein Stück« (Vienna Staatsoper at the Odeon) as well as »Winterreise« (Franz Schubert/Hans Zender) and »Nutcracker Suite« at Klagenfurt City Theatre.

He has collaborated very closely with Keith Warner doing the choreography for, among other things, the latter’s staging of »Die Frau ohne Schatten« at the Hamburg State Opera, of »Orlando paladino« and »Don Giovanni« at Theater an der Wien, »Parsifal« at the Copenhagen Opera and »Doktor Faust« at the Semperoper Dresden. Karl Alfred Schreiner has also worked with Josef E. Köpplinger in Klagenfurt (»Die lustige Witwe«, »Ein Sommernachtstraum«, »Koukourgi«), at the Aalto Theatre in Essen (»La traviata«) and at the Vienna Volksoper (»Fra Diavolo«).

Karl Alfred Schreiner has been ballet director of the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz since the 2012/2013 season, choreographing pieces such as »Im weißen Rössl«, »Der Bettelstudent«, »Die Zirkusprinzessin«, »Viktoria und ihr Husar, »King Arthur«, »My Fair Lady«, »Der Messias« und »Schuberts Reise nach Atzenbrugg« and created ballets such as »Sleeping Beauty«, »memento mori«, »Berlin 1920«, »Schlagobers«, »Chicago 1930«, »Jean und Antonín«, »The Nutcracker«, »Atlantis« and »Undine – Ein Traumballett«.
